Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
