Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
